Online Distribution results announced

The European Commission has announced the latest results from its funding opportunity for Online Distribution. The grants aim to assist with the digital distribution of European films to wider, international audiences, which is one of the Creative Europe programme's key aims.

The support for 13 Video-on-Demand (VoD) platforms from nine European countries has been renewed with a total amount of 3.47 million, including the UK's Distrify Media and Curzon Home Cinema. In addition, five further European projects which experiment with new models of distribution using digital technologies have secured funding.

Among the successful applicants, the UK's Curzon Film World is awarded just over €340,000 for its ambitious day-and-date release project for the MEDIA-funded feature, Tale of Tales. Acclaimed director Matteo Garrone's film will be released simultaneously on a wide range of VoD platforms and on more cinema screens in the UK and Ireland than ever to date. The Irish territory, where day-and-date releases usually open on two or three screens, will be a key point of expansion with 20 locations planned. Supported by excellent critical reviews and an extensive marketing campaign, Curzon Film World's experiment with a high-profile, commercially appealing film hopes to reach a wide audience thereby demonstrating a successful, innovative business model for multiplatform releasing.

Full results are published online and the other projects which have secured funding are:

  • Walk this Way 2016 (France: €650,000)
  • Speed Bunch 4 (France: €150,000)
  • Tide 4 (France: €500,000)
  • IFFR Live (Netherlands: €280,000)
