MEDIA films on UK screens: January

Edgy Danish thriller TV show Heartless takes place in a boarding school where past and present, reality and fantasy, life and death come together in a supernatural story. The series was developed with the support of the previous MEDIA programme.

Heartless is now available on Channel 4's new foreign language VoD platform. Watch the trailer below:

A War (Krigen)

Danish director Tobias Lindholm's war drama tells the story of a military troupe in Afghanistan captured by the Taliban, whose commander is accused of having committed a war crime. The film was selected as the Denmark entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at this year's Academy Awards, making the December shortlist of nine films.

The film benefitted from the MEDIA sub-programme's funding schemes for distribution, as well as receiving a grant at development stage through the Single Project scheme.

A War (Krigen) is released by Studio Canal on 8 January.

Youth (La Giovinezza)

After its success at the European Film Awards where it was hailed as an example of borderless filmmaking, Paolo Sorrentino's second English-language film will hit UK cinema screens at the end of the month. Starring Michael Caine, it tells of Fred, a retired composer and conductor who is recuperating at a Swiss spa with his old friend Mick (Harvey Keitel). As Mick crafts what may be his final screenplay, Fred is given the opportunity to perform for the Queen.

The film's distribution in France has been supported by the Sales Agents scheme and its release in several European territories was supported through the Automatic scheme.

Youth is released in the UK on 29 January by Studio Canal.
