MEDIA films on UK screens – February 2020
In 1933, Welsh journalist Gareth Jones risks his life to expose the truth about the devastating famine in the Soviet Union.
Directed by Agnieszka Holland, the film received support through the Automatic distribution scheme.
Released in cinemas on 7 February by Signature Entertainment, the film will also be available to stream on Creative Europe-supported Curzon Home Cinema.
Directed by Jessica Hausner, this unconventional science-fiction film was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. The film received support through the Sales Agents scheme.
Alice, a single mother, is a dedicated senior plant breeder at a corporation engaged in developing new species. The plants have been engineered to provide therapeutic value, and make its owner happy. Against company policy, she takes one home as a gift for her teenage son, Joe. As it grows, so too does Alice's suspicion that her new creations may not be as harmless as intended.
Released in cinemas on 21 February by BFI Distribution.
Portrait of a Lady on Fire
France, 1770. Marianne, a painter, is commissioned to do the wedding portrait of Héloïse, a young woman who has just left the convent. Héloïse is a reluctant bride to be and Marianne must paint her without her knowing. She observes her by day, to paint her secretly, and quite soon the two women become much closer.
Written and directed by Celine Sciamma, the film won the Queer Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival 2019 and has received support through the Automatic distribution scheme.
Released in cinemas on 28 February by Curzon, and also available to stream on Creative Europe-supported Curzon Home Cinema.
