Kaunas announced as European Capital of Culture 2022
Kaunas in Lithuania has been announced as the European Capital of Culture 2022. The Capital of Culture will be shared with a city in Luxembourg.
Applications were examined by a panel of 10 independent experts appointed by EU institutions and bodies.
Tibor Navracsics, European Commissioner responsible for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, said: "I congratulate Kaunas on its successful bid. Since their inception in 1985, European Capitals of Culture have helped to bring European citizens closer together, to encourage openness and exchange and to foster economic and social development of cities and regions."
In December 2016, the UK launched the competition for a city to be European Capital of Culture 2023.
