The Last Panthers

Creative Europe-funded series The Last Panthers premieres at MIPCOM

Creative Europe-funded TV series The Last Panthers had its world premiere screening last night at MIPCOM, a leading entertainment content market which takes place in Cannes.

The six-part crime drama stars Samantha Morton, Tahar Rahim, Goran Bogdan and John Hurt, and is based on the true story of international gang the Pink Panthers, which was known for its bold robberies and involvement in weapons and drug trafficking.

The series is a co-production between the UK’s Warp Films and French company Haut et Court. It was the first programme to receive a maximum grant of €1 million through Creative Europe’s TV Programming scheme. The €1 million grants were introduced in 2014 to support the production and distribution of co-produced, high-end TV drama series.

Like previous internationally successful dramas such as The Killing, The Bridge and The Returned (Les Revenants), Creative Europe investment in European TV productions supports their capacity for export, helping them to compete on the global stage. For example, American network SundanceTV has now acquired The Last Panthers for the US.

The series will have a pan-European broadcast premiere next month, with the first episode screening simultaneously in the UK, Ireland, Italy, Germany and Austria on 12 November through Sky Atlantic. Canal Plus will also debut the programme in France later in the year.
