ON THE BLOG: Q+A with See-Saw Films

Katherine Bridle, Head of Film Development, tells us about their experience being awarded Creative Europe development funding, including how the Creative Europe grant has allowed them to take more chances and explore future collaborations.

Tell us about your company

“Founded in 2008, See-Saw Films is a London-based company specialising in commercial international film and television production.

“Our first film production, The King’s Speech, won four Academy Awards, seven BAFTAs and three European Film Awards. We have gone on to work with directors including Steve McQueen, Jane Campion and Anton Corbijn across film and TV.”

What have you most recently received funding for? Is this your first Creative Europe grant?

“See-Saw Films recently received Creative Europe funding for a development slate of three feature film projects.

“It’s the first time we’ve received Creative Europe funding for development projects but several of our productions have received funding at later stages, for example The King’s Speech’s European distribution was supported by Creative Europe.”

What stage are the projects at now?

“The projects are at various stages of development, from treatment to completed drafts.”

What will the grant enable you to do?

“The needs of each project are different, but largely the Creative Europe grant will alleviate financial pressures on the projects, allowing us take more chances at crucial stages of development and explore collaborations that otherwise wouldn’t have been possible.

“The knock on effect of this will be to allow us the time and freedom to develop the projects carefully and rigorously.”

What advice would you give to potential applicants?

“Conceptually, I would advise to really consider what your project (or projects) can offer the European and international landscape as a whole and not just focus on what the grant could do for the project(s). How will your project be received by, and offer an opportunity for, European partners creatives and audiences?

“Practically, take advantage of the knowledge and assistance of Creative Europe Desk UK team, they are fantastically helpful and we owe Agnieszka and Francesca a huge debt of thanks.”
