ON THE BLOG: Five Questions for Lupus Films
Joint Managing Director and Producer Ruth Fielding gives us her advice for applying for funding through the TV Programming scheme and tells us how the grant has helped Lupus Films expand their audience.
What have you most recently received funding for?
Our 30 minute animated special We’re Going on a Bear Hunt received funding through the TV Programming scheme. Its due to air this Christmas on Channel 4.
Is there anything you were worried about before applying?
“The competition – i.e. how many other companies were applying at the same time and if there would be enough money to go round. Also, we worried about getting enough pre-sale commitment letters from European broadcasters in advance of our application.”
What will this grant allow you to do?
“This grant closed the finance on our production so that we could make it in time for Christmas this year! We had a transmission slot that Channel 4 and our other broadcasters wanted to hit of Christmas 2016 as that’s typically when they show this kind of family content, and by accessing the MEDIA grant we were able to close the finance and deliver in time for that deadline.”
Aside from financially, what are the benefits to you of MEDIA funding?
“It means your work with be shared by a truly international audience. It enables your work to be seen and appreciated by your peers throughout Europe and not just in the UK.”
What advice would you give to potential applicants?
“Dot your i’s and cross your t’s. Attention to detail is crucial, particularly in terms of the budget. It’s also important not just to think about the production of your project, but the marketing and publicity strategy for disseminating your work after it’s finished too.”
