ON THE BLOG: Chris Martin on Producers on the Move

Each year at the Cannes International Film Festival, 20 up-and-coming producers from throughout Europe are selected to participate in Producers On The Move. The initiative is aimed at connecting young, enterprising European producers with potential co-production partners, strengthening their industry networks and, at the same time, providing a solid and visible platform for this next generation of European filmmakers.

The selected producers take part in project pitching, one-to-one meetings and case studies, social events and an extensive press campaign. We talk to Belfast-based Chris Martin, Producer and CEO of Indie Films, about his experience.

How did it feel being selected for Producer on the Move 2017?

“A great honour actually. In recent times there has been a focus on Northern Ireland as a location and for crews and actors, but not for producers. It's nice to get the recognition.”

Why did you apply for the programme?

“To help shine a spotlight on particular projects that we are casting and financing.”

Was it what you expected?

“Yes, we had a schedule planned out for us over the festival so we knew the meeting and events. Obviously spontaneous things happen from various meetings and that is a great unexpected element.”

What were the highlights for you?

“Finding a suitable co-producer in Europe. It’s such a relationship-based business and carefully selecting a co-producer that you get on with on a personal and business level is vital.”

What will you take away from Producers on the Move?

“That my projects are as well received worthy and valued as any others from around Europe, but it’s the knowledge of other countries' industries that can help get them made.”

Why is this programme important? What are its unique benefits?

“To maintain, strengthen and forge relationships with European projects and producers. In light of Brexit we have a responsibility in the film and creative industries to keep collaborating and fighting for the free movement of labour with our film crews. Nothing good in this world ever came from division.”
