The competition for a UK city to become European Capital of Culture 2023 has been launched by the UK Government.

Applications are invited by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, which is responsible for running the competition process for the UK.

A winner will be announced by the end of 2018. The bidding cities stand to win official EU accreditation as European City of Culture and the €1.5 million Melina Mercouri prize money that goes with it. However, it is yet to be confirmed whether the UK will be able to host European Capitals of Culture once it leaves the EU.
