Moving Classics premieres new works in Manchester

Moving Classics, a Creative Europe-supported Cooperation Project, and Curated Place, the project’s lead partner, present a world premiere of a new music and live animation work by Enrica Sciandrone for Psappha Ensemble as the launch concert of Enlighten Manchester Festival of Light and Sound Art in Manchester on 10 December.

Celebrated film composer Enrica Sciandrone has spent 2015 as Moving Classics composer in residence with leading new music ensemble, Psappha. Inspired by author Philip Pullman’s new translation of the Brothers’ Grimm fairy tales (with Pullman’s full support) she has created a new suite of works bringing "The Bremen Town Musicians" to life, drawing on her experience of storytelling through music for the moving image. Psappha will also perform works by Halldór Smárason, who was inspired by the archive of the Anthony Burgess Foundation during his Moving Classics residency last year, and feature a performance of “Nightswimming” by Joe Duddell.

Back in August 2015, Moving Classics premiered ‘Surrounded by Strangers’, a new work by Eyvind Gulbrandsen at Cycle Music and Art Festival in Iceland. The piece has now been developed into an immersive digital choir installation which is shown at the Enlighten Festival taking place in Manchester Central Library and The Bridgewater Hall. The installation will be presented in the spectacular Reading Room of the Central Library featuring the incredible voices of members of the South Iceland Chamber Choir. Each chorister projected onto one of 12 screens placed in the circular room surrounding the audience. Up close, audiences will hear the solo performance, but in the centre of the space, the audio syncs so that visitors can hear the entire choir. Entrance is free, but booking is required.

Moving Classics – European Network for New Music is small Cooperation Project, involving partners in the UK, Norway and Iceland. It aims to introduce new audiences to contemporary classical music by delivering high quality experiences internationally in unusual venues using innovative performance formats.
