Europa Distribution panel

Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Distribution But Were Afraid to Ask

Outside of the cinema industry, few are aware of the bridge that takes a film from being made to being seen: distribution. So, what do distributors do?

Addressing the question in an open panel at the MIA (International Audiovisual Market) during the Rome Film Festival, Creative Europe-funded network Europa Distribution provoked a participative debate that revealed Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Distribution But Were Afraid to Ask.

Moderated by Screen International's Andreas Wiseman, Andy Whittaker from UK documentary distributor Dogwoof joined other big European independents on the panel, including Stefano Massenzi from Lucky Red (Italy), Greta Akcijonaite from Kino Pasaka (Lithuania) and the Ivo Andrle from Aerofilms (Czech Republic).

Highlights of the discussion included the observation that since the number of films produced each year is growing, the lifespan of films has become much shorter, making a distributor's job of finding the film's audience more challenging.

Panellists agreed that good reviews and festival prizes are essential to a successful release, but that the role of film critics and festivals is changing. Other topics covered included the increasing popularity of Video-on-Demand (VoD) platforms, the current prevalence of high-quality television productions challenging the film industry as well as the distributor's thoughts about geo-blocking and the Digital Single Market (DSM).
