Still from Father (Babai)

German film wins Europa Cinemas Label in Karlovy Vary

Father (Babai), the debut feature from German director Visar Morina, was awarded the Europa Cinemas Label at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival

Created in 2003, the Europa Cinemas Label aims to enhance the promotion, circulation and box office runs of award-winning European films on the networks’ cinema screens across Europe.

This year’s jury was composed of four cinema exhibitors that are all members of the Europa Cinemas network.

As the winning film, Father (Babai) will now benefit from promotional support from the network, with incentives for exhibitors to extend the film’s run.

The jury said of the film:

Father (Babai) is a moving yet brutally honest story of an abandoned ten-year-old boy searching for his father. Filmed from the perspective of the boy, the film shows restraint and confidence in its depiction of the larger theme of immigration and in how it explores the complex father and son relationship.”
