UK announced as official country partner for Gamescom 2015

The United Kingdom (UK) has been named the official partner country for the Gamescom 2015 expo in Cologne, Germany (5 to 9 August 2015), further raising the profile of the UK’s games and interactive entertainment sector to a global audience.

This is not the first time that the UK has stood as the partner country for this trade fair. However, the scale of the event has increased significantly, with more UK-based games businesses than ever before signing up to be part of the UK industry stand, which will this year be featuring a Royal theme.

Our colleagues at the Creative Europe Desk NRW (Germany) will be present at the event with their 'Medienland NRW' stand, advising about Creative Europe.

They will also be partnering the gamesmatch@gamescom event, an international matchmaking initiative, taking place from 5 to 7 August 2015, at which games professionals speed up their business and expand their international network through pre-arranged 20 minute B2B meetings. Organised by the Enterprise Europe Network and NRW.Europa and hosted by the Mediencluster NRW, last year saw 182 meetings between game professionals from 15 countries. Registration is free with a valid ticket for Gamescom business area and open until 27 July 2015.

The UK stand will be run by UK Interactive Entertainment (Ukie), who states that more than £25 million worth of business took place at its stand last year. A new feature this year is the ‘Royal Box’, which gives companies a dedicated presentation area to launch their games and showcase their latest work to journalists and investors.

They will also be running the UK Game of the Show award, which is open to any developed but as yet unreleased UK game on display at the show.

Lastly, Ukie is working closely with UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) on key activities including an investment dinner, VIP networking drinks reception and high-level delegations from other markets visiting the UK stand.

"The United Kingdom is not only one of the most important markets worldwide, but it is also one of the most important locations for the development of computer and video games," says Dr. Maximilian Schenk, MD of German games trade body Bundesverband Interaktive Unterhaltungssoftware (BIU), co-organisers of Gamescom.

Ukie CEO Jo Twist added, "Gamescom is Europe’s premier stage for UK companies to meet business partners and investors from around the world. With record numbers of UK businesses attending and the UK being confirmed as official country partner, we’re making a real statement about the UK being one of the best places in the world to make and sell games."

Attendance for the event is already at a record numbers, but places are still available for businesses alongside sponsorship packages.

Gamescom takes place from 5 to 9 August 2015. Contact sam@ukie.org.uk if you are interested in attending.
