European Commission opens call for tenders for study on audience development

With its increased focus on audiences, the European Commission has opened a call for tenders for the study, 'Audience Development - How to Place Audiences at the Centre of Cultural Organisations'.

The Commission states that "Audience development is a strategic, dynamic and interactive process of making the arts widely accessible. It aims at engaging individuals and communities in experiencing, enjoying, participating in and valuing the arts through various means available today for cultural operators, from digital tools to volunteering, from co-creation to partnerships."

This research will work out successful approaches and methods for developing audiences that can be be shared among European cultural organisations. These recommended approaches will also be used as a basis for selection criteria in future calls for proposals launched by the Creative Europe programme.

The study also aims to help cultural leaders make a convincing case for increasing the focus on audiences. This will be done both internally (towards boards of directors, communications and artistic departments, advisory committees and other decision structures), and externally, vis-à-vis public authorities, patrons, friends schemes, or sponsors, for example.
