MEDIA films on UK screens: May
This month sees no less than seven French films or co-productions hitting UK shores. Très bien!
Argerich (Bloody Daughter)
An intimate family portrait exploring the relationship between a prominent pianist and her daughter. The documentary received TV Programming support in 2011. New Wave Films will release the film in the UK on 1 May.
From the directors of the breakout hit Les Intouchables, Samba follows a recent migrant to France as he fights to stay in his adopted country with the help of a rookie immigration worker (Charlotte Gainsbourg). Its release in Austria and Germany has been supported through the Creative Europe Automatic scheme. Koch Media will release the film in the UK on 1 May.
Bande de filles (Girlhood)
Céline Sciamma’s third film is a beautifully observed examination of a young girl’s search for identity in the underprivileged suburbs of Paris. The UK is one of 16 European countries where the film’s release is supported by the Selective distribution scheme. UK distributor STUDIOCANAL will release the film in the UK on 8 May.
Director Christian Petzold and actress Nina Hoss team up again for this German drama set in set in post-WWII Berlin. The film’s release has been supported through both the Automatic and Selective distribution schemes, covering 19 different territories, including the UK where Soda Pictures will release the film on 8 May.
Clouds of Sils Maria
A veteran actress (Juliette Binoche) turns to her assistant (Kristen Stewart) for solace as she prepares for a new production in this new film from French auteur Olivier Assayas. The UK is one of 20 European countries where the film’s release is supported by the Selective distribution scheme, with UK distributor Curzon Film World releasing the film on 15 May.
Muumit Rivieralla (Moomins on the Riviera)
A hand-drawn animated tale based on Tove Jansson’s much-loved comic strips. Finnish production company Handle Pictures were awarded a Single Project development grant for the project in 2012. Vertigo/Lionsgate UK will release the film in the UK on 22 May.
Une nouvelle amie (The New Girlfriend)
François Ozon’s new drama is a smart and sly satire – with some jaw-dropping twists – about gender, class and consumerism. Distributors across many European countries received grants through the Automatic and Selective distribution schemes to support the release of the film in their territories. Metrodome will release the film in the UK on 22 May.
Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2015, this This French-Mauritanian film follows the story of a cattle herder and his family who reside in the dunes of Timbuktu. The UK is one of 17 European countries where the film’s release is supported by the Selective distribution scheme, with UK distributor Curzon Film World releasing the film on 29 May.
