In the latest round of funding from Creative Europe’s TV Programming scheme, 19 of the 77 applications have been selected for funding, receiving non-repayable grants totalling €6.8 million.

Applications were received from 16 participating countries and 11 countries are present in the list of selected projects. 10 projects from the UK were submitted, of which three production companies have been selected for their respective titles receiving €898,750 in total.

  • Origin Pictures' Catherine the GreatHBO and Sky have partnered for a four-part drama about history’s most powerful female monarch, played by Oscar-winner Helen Mirren. The project was also supported in development as part of Origin’s 2016 slate.
  • Spring Films' Meeting Gorbachev; prolific director Werner Herzog’s candid conversations with the former Soviet head of state form the backbone of this illuminating documentary, co-directed by André Singer, on one of the 20th century’s most defining politicians.
  • Orange Eyes' Zog; written in 2010 by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler, creators of the modern classic The Gruffalo, this heart warming and enchanting half hour animated special will be voiced by a stellar cast of British acting talent. Orange Eyes are also behind Creative Europe-funded animations such as Revolting Rhymes, Stick Man and The Highway Rat

This scheme supports the production of European television programmes with the potential to circulate within the EU and beyond. Two of the selected projects are historical dramas - of the fiction and non-fiction variety -  focusing on formidable Russian leaders of eras past, whilst the final project is an animated special due to air on Christmas Day.

There were also two projects granted funding with the UK as a partnering country:

  • Trésors de Mésopotamie, des archéologues face à Daech
  • Interstellar Ella
