MEDIA-supported Oscar nominee The Breadwinner triumphs at the Emile Awards

Directed by Nora Twomey, The Breadwinner (Ireland, Canada, Luxembourg) won awards in all four of the categories it was nominated in at the 2018 Emile Awards in Lille, France.

These included:

- Best Direction in a Feature Film

- Best Storyboard in a Feature Film Production

- Best Character Animation in a Feature Film Production

- Best Background & Character Design in a Feature Film Production

In her acceptance speech, Twomey asserted "Nobody makes feature films like Europe. It's an incredible honour to be a part of this industry, part of this artform."

Another Day of Life, which received Single Project development funding under the previous MEDIA programme in 2011, was nominated in five different categories and came away with one award:

- Best Soundtrack in a Feature Film Production

The Emile Awards, now in their second year are named in commemoration of two pioneers in the French animation industry: Emile Reynaud, who created the Praxinoscope and Emile Cohl, a caricaturist and cartoonist who exhibited one of the earliest forms of hand-drawn animation. Across 16 different categories, the awards have sought to celebrate the European animation community and its contributions to the craft. 

Other MEDIA-supported films also nominated this year included The Highway Rat for Best Writing, Storyboard, Character Animation and Soundtrack in a TV/Broadcast Production and Early Man for Best Storyboard and Character Animation in a Feature Film Production.  

Funan, an animation co-produced by France, Luxembourg, Belgium and Cambodia was supported by the Council of Europe's Eurimages Fund and picked up two awards:

- Best Writing in a Feature Film Production

- Best Sound Design in a Feature Film Production
