MEDIA films on UK screens: January

The Favourite

It's the early 18th century, England is at war with France and Queen Anne's (Olivia Colman) poor health finds her relying on her doting friend Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz). When Sarah's cousin Abigail (Emma Stone) arrives at the Palace, her charm soon wins the Queen's attentions and the shrewd girl sees a way to restore her social status, lost through her father's disastrous wagers. With stakes of the heart high, the two women soon become rivals for the Queen's affections in a wickedly funny game of one-up-womanship.

Creative Europe supported the film under the previous MEDIA programme in 2003, with a €50,000 Single Project grant awarded to Scarlet Films to aids its development.

The Favourite is released by Fox Searchlight in the UK on 1 January.

Colette

After marrying a successful Parisian writer known commonly as “Willy” (Dominic West), Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette (Keira Knightley) is transplanted from her childhood home in rural France to the intellectual and artistic splendour of Paris. Soon after, Willy convinces Colette to ghost-write for him. She pens a semi-autobiographical novel about a witty and brazen country girl named Claudine, sparking a bestseller and a cultural sensation. After its success, Colette and Willy become the talk of Paris and their adventures inspire additional Claudine novels. Colette's fight over creative ownership defies gender roles and drives her to overcome societal constraints, revolutionizing literature, fashion and sexual expression.

Number 9 Films received a Creative Europe grant of €180,000 through the Slate Funding scheme in 2015 which supported the development of the project.

Colette is released by Lionsgate in the UK on 9 January.

Bergman - A Year In a Life ( Bergman - ett år, ett liv)

Jane Magnusson directs and narrates a documentary that exposes the darker, less well-known side to one of the most famous directors in world cinema. Focusing on 1957, a landmark year in which Bergman directed two films and four plays, Magnusson explores not only the director's filmography but also his at times complex and turbulent personal life.

The film received Creative Europe support at the development stage and through the Automatic Distribution scheme.

Bergman - A Year In a Life is released in the UK by BFI Distribution on 25 January.
