Five Creative Europe-funded films receive BAFTA nominations for 2019
The BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Award) nominations for 2019 were announced this morning by actors Hayley Squires (I, Daniel Blake) and Will Poulter (The Revenant), with four MEDIA-funded films receiving a total of 19 nominations. The nominated films are:
- The Favourite
- Cold War
- The Wife
- Ray & Liz
The Favourite, supported at the development stage with a grant to Scarlet Films under a previous MEDIA programme, picked up a staggering 12 nominations. These include; Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Best Director for Yorgos Lanthimos, Best Actress for Olivia Colman, Best Supporting Actress for both Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz. Best Original Screenplay for Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara and Best Cinematography for Robbie Ryan (whose previously credits include MEDIA-supported films I, Daniel Blake, American Honey and Philomena), alongside nods for its Costume Design, Editing, Production Design and Hair & Make-Up.
Cold War received four nominations, including Best Director for Pawel Pawlikowski, Film Not in the English language, Best Original Screenplay and Best Cinematography where it will compete among the likes of The Favourite, First Man, Roma, Bohemian Rhapsody, Green Book and Vice. Polish production company Opus Films received Slate funding in 2014 for the development of the project, whilst the release of the film in the Czech Republic, France, Hungary, Spain and the UK was supported via both the Automatic and Selective Distribution schemes for its releases.
The Wife, Dogman and Ray & Liz, received one nomination each. The former saw Glenn Close nominated for Best Actress, whilst Matteo Garrone's crime drama is nominated for Best Film not in the English language. Renowned photographer Richard Billingham's debut Ray & Liz was recognised in the Outstanding Debut category.The Wife was granted development funding, and all three films were supported through the Automatic Distribution scheme.
