Europa Cinemas Conference in Prague

Europa Cinemas Network Conference explores the current role of cinema

Nearly 500 delegates and speakers from Europe and beyond gathered in Prague for the 19th Europa Cinemas Network Conference, from 27 to 29 November 2015, to discuss the role of the cinema in a changing environment.

The conference explored dynamic communications techniques to build new audiences and retain existing ones. There was also an in-depth look at the role of cinema as a key audience-facing brand for films and as a brand itself, as a driver for increasing interest in diverse films and as a space of education, cultural diversity and human interaction. The consensus was that there is no demand for the diversity of films if the demand is not created.

"In previous Europa Cinemas conferences we were preoccupied by the digital transition and implications for members. Now, with all Europa Cinemas members digitised, we have put the vital role of the cinema at the heart of the discussion and looked at a broad and fantastic selection of ideas and innovations from cinemas across Europe to engage audiences in the diversity of European film culture," commented the president of Europa Cinemas, Nico Simon.

Other topics of debate included whether cinemas could be more accessible and open to audience participation. Several innovative approaches and potential relationships for cinema with new platforms were presented as ways to help develop audiences. The need for investment in new cinema spaces and ongoing development of existing ones was also highlighted.

In addition, the following Europa Cinemas Awards were presented at the conference:

  • Entrepreneur of the Year: Mirsad Purivatra, Kino Meeting Point, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Best Programming: Filmhuis Den Haag, The Hague, Netherlands
  • Best Young Audience Activities: Cine Paradisos, Korydallos, Greece
