Creative Europe at work at EIFF
The 69th Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF) drew to a close last week, having seen its highest attendance rates for seven years.
On 25 June 2015, Creative Europe Desk UK - Scotland held an industry event at the Traverse Theatre as part of the festival, with two speakers who had received funding from Creative Europe's MEDIA sub-programme. The 'Make European Funding work for you' panel gave attendees an opportunity to find out more about Creative Europe’s funding opportunities for film, TV, new media and games.
Emma Valentine, Creative Europe Desk UK - Scotland MEDIA Officer, gave a brief introduction to the MEDIA sub-programme. This was followed by a presentation from Cinefile's Ilona Morison about their film The Priest’s Children, which was funded through the Selective distribution scheme.
Cinefile received Selective Distribution support of €22,800 for their most recent title. Ilona showed a clip from The Priest’s Children and spoke about a network, Eye on Films (EoF) which they are a partner in.
Ken Anderson from Red Kite Animation talked in detail about their TV Programming funding of €356,350 for animation, Bradley and Bee. Ilona and Ken spoke about the challenges of getting the funding and, most particularly, the benefits it has brought to their companies. There was ample opportunity for from the audience of almost 30 delegates at the end.
After the session, participants has an opportunity to chat informally at Early Doors Networking Drinks in association with Creative Scotland in the theatre's Traverse Bar.
Ilona Morison thanked Creative Europe Desk UK - Scotland for the invitation to speak: "I would like to say how much I enjoyed our exchange of views about Creative Europe. Our distribution company would not be able to bring out small independent films without the help of the MEDIA sub-programme. You gave the often arcane and difficult-to-manoeuvre system a human face. Facing an audience of dedicated filmmakers and film lovers was both enjoyable and informative. The follow-up discussions in the bar afterwards were invaluable."
Ken Anderson added, "I thought that the event was extremely effective at communicating the range and nature of the products that Creative Europe has on offer and through real life examples of distribution, development and production anecdotes, "warts and all". The audience was given a very accessible, authentic and engaging experience."
Michael Powell Award
Meanwhile we are delighted that the festival's top prize, the Michael Powell award for best British feature film, has gone to Creative Europe-backed 45 Years, Andrew Haigh's third feature. Adapted from a novel by David Constantine, the drama received support from Creative Europe's Sales Agents scheme, as well as funding for its release through the Automatic scheme for distribution.
