2020 round-up: Creative Europe video game releases
Creative Europe supports the development of prototypes for narrative-led video games that demonstrate a high level of ambition in terms of innovation, cultural diversity, gameplay, user experience and artistic expression. The aim of the support is to improve the competitiveness of the European video games industry by increasing its capacity to develop works with a high circulation potential, both in the EU and beyond.
10 MEDIA-supported games were released in 2020 (with 2 available to pre-order for 2021), including three from UK developers The Chinese Room, Revolution Software and Wales Interactive.
Journey to New Atlantis
Journey to New Atlantis is a post-apocalyptic adventure game that follows Lana and her friend Marco in their quest to find water for Lana’s ill grandfather, in a world almost completely dried up. Lana’s grandfather tells them of an oasis city called New Atlantis, and the two children will need to brave sandstorms, roving bands of survivors, and traverse wonderful landscapes that show humankind’s effect on the environment. This post-apocalyptic game was developed by Portuguese company BeActive Pruducoes Interactivas and was released in the last week of 2019.

What if all the protagonists of books lost their memory? Venture into their world and beat the hell out of historical and literary characters you studied in school! Bookbound Brigade is a new take on the established Metroidvania genre where classic stories and well-known characters get the video game treatment and where the player gets to lead a colorful bunch of real and fictional heroes in a quest to battle overwhelming hordes of monsters and bring order back to the literary world. This literary and historical labyrinthine game was developed by Italian company Digital Tales.
Broken Lines was developed by Danish PortaPlay and is a war-game told from the perspective of the individual soldiers. A game for people who like real-time tactics and strategy games, but are too slow to play them. Give orders to your men, while in pause - and total control. Then see the execution in real-time - sometimes resulting in catastrophic failure.
Someday You’ll Return
Developed by Czech’s CBE Software, Someday You'll Return is a story-driven psychological horror game about a desperate search for a missing daughter deep in the woods where you swore you'd never return, brought to you by the creative duo behind J.U.L.I.A.: Among the Stars.

From UK developer The Chinese Room, the BAFTA-winning team behind Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture and Dear Esther, this is a side-scrolling adventure game about one comrade’s journey to the centre of the Earth. The year is 1962. NASA are trying to put a man on the moon but in a remote corner of Siberia, a Soviet cosmonaut is heading in the other direction. Ivan Ivanovich is dropped into an extinct volcano in his exploration capsule, Little Orpheus, to explore the centre of the earth!

Beyond a Steel Sky (previously called The Enemy Within)
Developed by UK based Revolution Software, Beyond a Steel Sky is a dramatic, humorous, cyberpunk thriller in which engaging puzzles drive a fast-paced narrative set in a dynamic gameworld that responds to – and is subverted by – the player’s actions. It was created by Charles Cecil, maker of the Broken Sword series, with art direction by Dave Gibbons, legendary comic book artist behind Watchmen.
Maid of Sker
Maid of Sker, developed by Wales Interactive, is a first-person survival horror, set in a remote hotel with a gory and macabre history from British folklore. Armed with only a defensive sound device, you’ll utilise stealth tactics to avoid death amongst a cult of sound-based AI enemies. Set in 1898 and inspired by the haunting Welsh tale of Elisabeth Williams, this is a story of a family empire driven by torture, slavery, piracy and a supernatural mystery that suffocates the grounds of the hotel.
The Dungeon Of Naheulbeuk: The Amulet Of Chaos
Developed by French company Artefacts Studio this is a heroic fantasy universe of the Dungeon of Naheulbeuk with an unlikely and clumsy team of heroes in an epic and challenging tactical RPG. Live an adventure filled with humor, surprises and silly encounters!
The Girl of Glass: A Summer Bird's Tale
Developed by Swedish company Markus with Friends, this game brings the story of Kristal as she sets out on her journey to better understand herself and the world around her in a point and click adventure game, featuring turn-based combat and hand-painted environments.

Leisure Suit Larry - Wet Dreams Dry Twice
The next multi-platform conquest begins! Publisher Assemble Entertainment and German developer CrazyBunch present the point-and-click adventure Leisure Suit Larry - Wet Dreams Dry Twice, which follows the iconic ladies’ man, Larry Laffer, through the Kalau’a archipelago as he searches high and low for his lost love, the delightfully divine Faith.

Created by Bloober Team, an indie developer based in Kraków, Poland, The Medium is a third-person psychological horror game that features patented dual-reality gameplay and an original soundtrack co-composed by Arkadiusz Reikowski and Akira Yamaoka.
Developed by German company Realmforge Studios, Spacebase Startopia captivates with its original mixture of economic simulation and empire building strategy paired with classic RTS skirmishes and a good dose of humour.
