Peirene publishes three books a year and each annual series is curated according to a theme. In 2015 we will publish our 6th series, entitled: ‘Chance Encounters’. The series comprises three books that explore different aspects of interpersonal relationships and the importance of the Other in our development as individuals and our understanding of ourselves. Only through our relationships with others can we grow and develop our full potential as human beings, however it is arguable that we have never been more isolated from one another than in this supposed ‘era of communication’. This series shows the life-changing impact that personal relationships can have on the individual and reminds us that no man is an island, a particularly apt image for a series of European novels to be translated into English and published in an island country. By reading these three high-quality novellas, our readers will enjoy their own ‘chance encounters’ – with the authors, with the translators, with Peirene, with other readers – and engage in a dialogue with the Other that we expect will enrich not only their lives, but also those of others. The Creative Europe grant will help to translate and publish the series to the highest standard. The grant will also play a vital role in promoting the books. The three novellas are:

  • White Hunger by Aki Ollikainen, translated from the Finnish by Emily Jeremiah and Fleur Jeremiah
  • Reader for Hire by Raymond Jean, translated from the French by Adriana Hunter
  • The Looking-Glass Sisters by Gøhril Gabrielsen, translated from the Norwegian by John Irons.
