The Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe, the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon and the National Galleries of Scotland have been planning a long-term cooperation since 2001. The first collaborative project for these three distinguished European art institutions is I am Here! European Faces. The project concentrates on the self-portrait, a type of portrait which occupies a core place in the history of European art.

In each of the three partner institutions there will be an exhibition of around 150 self-portraits. Art works will be from the partner collections and span six centuries with over a hundred artists represented.  These portraits also cover most of the media used in portraiture from the sixteenth century to the present day. At the National Galleries of Scotland, the exhibition – Facing the World: Self-Portraits from Rembrandt to Ai Weiwei – will take place at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery from 16 July 2016 – 16 October 2016. Ever since the Renaissance, and in some cases even earlier, artists have self-consciously created images of themselves. This exhibition presents an exciting selection of portraits, in various media spanning six centuries, from Rembrandt to Ai Weiwei’s instagram posts. The topic is more relevant than ever, as social media thrives on self-portraits and the continual presentation of self.

In addition to paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, time-based media and sculpture the exhibition will feature two interactive installations created by Zentrum for Kunst and Medientechnologie (ZKM), Karlsruhe: FLICK_EU and FLICK_EU MIRROR. As part of FLICK_EU, visitors are encouraged to make portraits of themselves inside a photo booth. The portraits will be broadcast in the exhibition and online at www.i-am-here.eu. Through the three-venue exhibition a European portrait gallery will emerge and grow. In FLICK_EU MIRROR the visitor is filmed and their face emerges on a large projection – made up of the images generated of other visitors in FLICK_EU.

As part of I am Here! a joint website for the project has been created and social media performances and workshops of art students with young visitors are planned in every exhibition.
